Do they have passion for the mission? 3 Keys to Finding the Right Board Members

Labor Day is behind us and we’re now in recruitment season!

Selecting the right people is vital to creating an effective, impactful board. Despite this reality, we often fail to spend enough time listening to prospective board members to get a sense of their fit.

Ask these questions to discern whether your prospects have a real passion for the organization’s mission.

#1 Why would you want to serve on this board?
This isn’t a challenge, or an indictment, but it will give insight into a person’s motivation. If they can’t express a good reason for their interest, they won’t be a good fit.

#2
What legacy do you want to leave?
Sometimes I’ll ask, “On your last day on this board, what do you want to leave behind?” If we begin by discussing lasting intent, we lay the groundwork for a meaningful legacy. This question reveals the prospect’s purpose.

#3
If we were willing to receive any gift you would offer, what would you like to bring to the organization?
This question deals with ambitions. When someone opens their soul and says, “This is what I would love to accomplish,” then we can focus on how to make it happen.

The most important quality members bring to the board is passion for the mission. When a prospect can express their passion in concrete terms, you know you’ve found someone who can make a great impact on the organization!

Conversely, if the answers you hear are ‘me’ centric, it’s time to move on to a better candidate.

I hope this gets you off to a great start on recruitment season!
