In April, I shared some simple ways to show appreciation for your board members and explained a little bit about why it’s so important for your organization to do. Today, we’ll focus on the “who” in board appreciation and talk about another simple tip to show your board members you appreciate their work!
So, you might be asking yourself “whose responsibility is it to thank the board?” There are two answers to that question. The first is the formal answer. It is likely that your organization has policies and procedures in place for board appreciation. Those procedures are in place with the best intentions and should be recognized!
The informal answer? ME! The answer to “who should?” is “I should”. Whether it comes from a fellow board member, a staff member, a volunteer or a user of the services of an organization, it is ALWAYS and welcome to hear “thank you” for what you do.
You’ve probably heard the term “plaque ’em off,” the idea of giving a board member a token of recognition and appreciation as they are leaving the board.
That’s nice, but I think it is much more effective to “plaque ’em on!”
When someone joins your board, take time to introduce them around, explaining to the community who they are and what they bring to the table. Give them credit right at the beginning of their service so that from the start they understand how grateful you are they joined your board. Give them recognition that goes beyond a simple plaque. Develop a culture of gratefulness for board members who give of their time in service of your mission.
Plaque ’em on!
Next month, I’ll share my third quick tip to thank your board and introduce a friend of mine who is a great example of putting these principles of board recognition into action. Stay tuned.
