What characteristics make for a great fundraiser?

Earlier this year, I served on a panel with other fundraising professionals, and this great question was posed to us: What are the top characteristics that make a good fundraiser?

For me, the answer has three parts.

FIRST: ‘an infinite capacity to not know what can’t be done.’

Too many people believe in what can’t be accomplished.  A good fundraiser has the ability to look beyond the doubt and to keep persevering, even if others think a goal is impossible.

SECOND: ‘a degree of fearlessness.’

Good fundraisers aren’t afraid, even when others would be.  We can allow ourselves to be paralyzed by fear of rejection, or we can step out and find the answers.  Sometimes, the answer will be “no,” but good fundraisers aren’t fazed by donors choosing not to fund their project or organization.

THIRD: ‘a lifelong learner.’ secondhand_bookshop.jpg
I love when someone ‘knows’ there’s something they don’t know.  Those people are on a quest to learn more; they don’t assume that past experience is enough to get by on. The best fundraisers I know are better today than they were a week ago, because they learn things from everyone they meet.  Good fundraisers must be good students.
Look beyond doubt and become a fearless, lifelong learner. When you master these skills, you’re on your way to becoming a great fundraiser.
Your friend,
P.S. May you enjoy your holiday celebrations with family and friends and best wishes for a wonderful 2017!
