The 7 levels of leadership

What if you could develop a style of leadership that positively influences and changes not only yourself, but also those with whom you work and interact?

You can! It’s called Energy Leadership.

Last September, I wrote about the 7 levels of energy and how they impact your life. (If you want a refresher, you can read it here.) As a quick reminder the 7 levels are as follows:

Catabolic Energy (draining, contracting energy)

  • Level 1: The Victim
  • Level 2: The Fighter

Anabolic Energy (expanding, growth oriented energy)

  • Level 3: The Rationalizer
  • Level 4: The Caregiver
  • Level 5: The Opportunist
  • Level 6: The Visionary
  • Level 7: The Creator

Let’s look at how the 7 levels of energy are related to leadership.

Leaders at Level 1 typically work in crisis mode because they tend to attract and focus on problems.  They have no real plan for where they are going and communication skills tend to be poor with no ability to inspire or motivate others. They tend to have a poor self-image and work mostly in survival mode.

Level 2 leaders are authoritarians with a superiority complex. Because they believe they can do anything better than anyone else, they are always judging others. They put their needs before others and don’t give credit to anyone else. They micromanage and are bossy and condescending.

At Level 3, a leader handles a crisis by moving to resolve it confidently and tactfully with logic rather than emotion. They are typically positive and productive, looking for solutions instead of focusing on problems. These leaders tend to take responsibility and get things done but don’t really care about the impact on people.

Level 4 leaders form deep connections with others. People respect them and find them trustworthy. They will go to bat for those who work for them. These leaders are concerned about how their decisions affect not only themselves but also those around them. Also, they typically have a more nurturing way of communicating.

Leaders at Level 5 are powerful, inspiring and are skilled at capitalizing on opportunities that come up. Their presence also inspires greatness in others. They expect greatness from others and receive it. These leaders see employees as gifted and full of potential. They motivate by believing in others.

At Level 6, leaders have a keen sense of intuition and use it regularly to make decisions and generate ideas. They are role models looked up to as being wise, kind and fair. These leaders are powerful, yet humble. They listen to feedback without ego blocks and participate in projects with others creating real connection.

No one resonates primarily at Level 7, but those who tap into this level can access their natural genius ability and consciously create their world.

Most of us have experienced leaders operating at Level 1 and Level 2. It is both exhausting and demoralizing to be in the presence of these leaders. Leaders operating from Levels 3-4 are much easier to work. Those leading from Levels 5-6 are truly inspirational!

As you consider your own Energy Leadership, where do you fall within the 7 levels of energy? Which level(s) would you like to tap into more as you develop your leadership abilities?

The higher your energy level, the more success both you and your organization will have!

Until next time,
