Tame your Gremlins

Guest post: Kathy Wright, COO for the Institute of Conversational Fundraising and Certified Professional Coach
“an imaginary mischievous sprite regarded as responsible for an unexplained problem or fault” “a small imaginary creature that is blamed when something does not work properly”

These words describe a gremlin.

A gremlin is also that little voice in your head saying, “I can’t do this, who do I think I am?” or “I’m not good enough, smart enough, pretty enough, I don’t know enough, I’ll fail if I try.” Gremlins see “problems” and find fault.

How much do we pay attention to that voice? How much power does that voice have in our lives? What can be done to tame that “I’m not…enough” gremlin?

Gremlins play a BIG part in holding us back from stepping into our greatness. My gremlin is pictured to the right. For many years it convinced me that I didn’t “know

“I don’t know enough”

enough” to do certain things. With my coach, I’m working to tame that gremlin so it doesn’t keep holding me back.

The first order of business when taming a gremlin is to name it. Recognize in what way the gremlin is telling you “You’re not good enough”. What form does it take? When does it show up? Name it so you can face it.

Second is to acknowledge it. Awareness of the gremlin is so important to the process. There are ways to treat a gremlin once it is acknowledged that will significantly reduce its impact in your life.

Third, explore why this gremlin is at work in your life. Typically, a gremlin has served to keep you small in some way. Perhaps it thinks it is protecting you. Perhaps fear keeps it fed. How does this gremlin serve you?

Finally, work on setting aside the gremlin so you can step into your power! When the gremlin no longer serves you, you can name and acknowledge it, explore how it is keeping you small and then set it aside. You are meant to do wonderful things in this world! Don’t let a little thing like a gremlin keep you from greatness.

Remember: You are “enough”!
