I’ve been thinking a lot about success in fundraising lately. It will come as no surprise to you to know that fundraising is, by its very nature, filled with change and uncertainty.
We face challenges that make it difficult to fund the mission of the charities we love so deeply.
Most of these hurdles result from factors beyond our control. The stock market, the price of oil, state and federal policies (read: tax reform) affect our organization just like they do others. We didn’t create the issues, and we can’t resolve them.
In light of this reality, let me offer two tips for breaking through barriers on your way to legendary success:
We wish donors would give when we think we need to receive. In reality, generous givers make their gift decisions when the timing is right for them.
After all, it’s their gift.
Successful fundraisers respond promptly to donors’ needs . . . whenever they arise. Determine in advance to be responsive to the donor’s priorities.
2. Pre-position your charity to receive larger gifts
Become active and visible in your community. Being in the right place at the right time is important in fundraising success. Since we don’t control the environment, we must take steps to be present, active, and visible to donors when they aren’t ready to give, so they’ll know where to go when they are ready to give.
My friend Rick sums up the task of fundraisers this way: “Get in line. Stay in line. Get to the front of the line.” While it’s not quite that simple, this idea does give us a great place to start!
If you’ll implement these two tips, you’ll soar over the obstacles that stand between you and success.
Here’s to your breakthrough . . . and success,
