My Top 5 Tips for this Tuesday

Last month Pam Witter and I presented 5 Strategies to Increase Your Annual Fund Revenue at the Association of Fundraising Professionals international conference.  We had lots of positive feedback on the presentation, and today I’m sharing 5 tips that will be of real value in your fundraising.  While these tips were presented with a focus on the annual fund, you’ll find them applicable to ALL types of fundraising.

#1: Show WHY – Put a name and a face on your mission.

This is all about branding.  Why should donors give to your organization?  Who are you going to impact with their gifts?  You must answer the “why” question in order to make an impression on donors.

#2: Think BIG – Define the real finish line.

This is all about data.  Data is an important part of the process, and too many people ignore its value.  The kind of data you keep will have a dramatic impact on the amount of revenue you raise.  Gather the right kinds of information and put it to use.

#3: Make a plan – Win the game on paper before you go on the playing field.

This is about segmentation.  We’ve all heard the adage “failing to plan is planning to fail,” and this can be especially true when it comes to making the big ASK.  It is important for your team to have a plan in place before you begin to seek contributions.  Planning makes a BIG difference!

#4: Start early – Time is your friend.

This tip is all about the relationships.  Relationships can be your secret weapon. Knowing who to ask, when to ask, and what to ask for are huge factors.  It is important to start early in building relationships.  Make a list of possible donors and look for ways to connect that are meaningful to them.

#5: Ask BOLDLY – “Small dreams stir no man’s soul.”

This step is all about best practices.  After you’ve done the work and you’re ready to make the big ask, ask with boldness.  Your dreams matter, and when donors buy into your dreams, you’ll both share the sense of satisfaction that follows.

These 5 tips will make a big difference just as soon as you put them into practice.

Sincerely,

20transparent
