Development Plans – why they matter so much

“I’ve got a great idea for a new event. No one else is doing one like it and I’m SURE it will raise a lot of money!” exclaimed an enthusiastic board member.
“Let’s add a couple more mailings this year to ask for donations. We increased our budget so need more income to meet it” said the new executive director.
What happens when you hear statements like this? Do you follow that next ‘detour’ or are you prepared with a calm response, referencing your organization’s clear_strategy.jpgcarefully thought out, written development plan?

A development plan is a comprehensive strategy for developing sustainable charitable support for an organization.  It is typically attached to a specific period of time, perhaps three years, for example. A development plan includes methods, strategies, people involved and timelines for both activities AND results.

A good development plan allows your organization to incorporate the various facets of a balanced fundraising strategy and intersperse them throughout that time period in an appropriate way.  Having a plan in place should help to avoid the common fundraising mistake of simply moving from one fundraising event to the next.  Most importantly, the development plan allows you time to ask important, strategic questions.

A balanced development plan will address the following:

  • methods of creating awareness and attracting interest in your mission
  • different ways of introducing new contributors
  • how to interact with various supporters, be they individual, families, businesses, foundations, or even other groups/organizations
  • balancing the overall operation by having strategies that relate to large numbers of smaller donors AND small numbers of larger donors
  • strategies for publicity, media other public relations functions
  • other specific factors that can play a role in your organization’s success
Why is a development plan so important?  It brings balance, structure and accountability to the fundraising process!  A good development plan guards against a ‘one-size fits all’ approach to fundraising.  What works for one organization may not necessarily translate into the same success for your NPO.  It’s important to craft a comprehensive development plan and in the process ask the right questions about how your organization measures success.
The start of a New Year is a great time to prepare a development plan to positively change your organization’s approach to fundraising. Use these tips to get started!
