“We’ll see what happens in the next election. Talk to me after November.”
“It’s probably best if we wait until the spring. I’m just not sure what will happen before then.”
Maybe you’ve gotten responses like these during conversations with donors or perhaps when your team comes together to plan your next steps. These are not unusual responses, especially during an election year. Things are uncertain, no one is quite sure what to expect, and many people are waiting and watching.
Uncertainty can be discouraging. Donors might be more prone to waiting before making that big gift. Or maybe as a fundraiser, you’re not sure when the appropriate time is to make that next phone call to set up a meeting.
Here’s the thing about uncertainty – it never goes away. Not completely. Maybe the excuse is the election. But then you decide to wait until Inauguration Day. But wait, we’d better see how the first quarter goes. And on, and on. Each week, month or season presents a new uncertainty that can feel like an insurmountable obstacle.
The difference between high achievers and everyone else is that uncertainty doesn’t make them freeze. Successful high achievers have a plan, as well as the confidence to move forward, even in the midst of uncertainty.
Uncertainty isn’t going to go away. No matter who takes office after the election, there will be questions and apprehension about the future. Don’t get lost in the shuffle of waiting until things become certain. That won’t happen. Prepare a plan and move forward, whether it is in your fundraising, your personal giving, or any other areas of your life. Uncertainty is normal. Work with it!
