Are these steps in the right order?

We all want results. Right?

The particulars about which results might differ from one situation to the next, but we tend to focus on the results we desire above anything else.

No matter what outcome you’re looking for – more money, bigger endowment, new buildings, etc. – there are five ingredients necessary if you are to get from here (where you are now) to there (where you wish to be):

  1. Results
  2. Action
  3. Vision
  4. Plans
  5. Resources

We have a tendency to add the ingredients in random order, or leave one or two out, but doing so will likely result in failure, and will most certainly create frustration for everyone involved.

So here’s my big question for you:

Do these 5 steps really have to be taken in a certain order?

I say ‘Yes’ and here’s why.

First, cast your vision
Vision is a clear description of what does not yet exist, but what we wish to be. The more clarity you have, the better! If you want a new building, you need a precise statement of why. Why will a new building achieve the organization’s mission?

Second, create detailed plans
Plans define how to get from where you are to where you wish to be. The plans will chart a path from not having a building . . . to having a building. My mentor, Norm Edwards, regularly admonished me with this truth: “Before we can win the war on the battlefield, we must be able to win it on paper.” Solid plans enable us to do just that.

Next, gather the necessary resources
Now it’s time to acquire the resources needed (consultant, volunteers, tools, etc.) to turn the plans into action. Too often we want to start with this step. But resources become useful to us only after we have a clear vision and detailed plans in place.

Fourth, take action
Now that you have the vision, the plan, and the resources – it’s time to act! Get that building started. Begin a new program. Whatever your vision calls for . . . take action!

Finally – Results!
After all the hard work of casting vision, drawing plans, gathering resources, and taking specific action, lean back and enjoy the results.

Remember, no other configuration of these steps will create the success you envision. Don’t set yourself up for frustration and failure by tampering with the order. You can achieve great results. And your mission will increase its impact.

Here’s wishing you every success,
